The Highlight of my Day

I taught my 5:30 class about hybrid animals today. I asked them to guess what a "zedonk" was, and after someone said animal, they realised pretty quickly that it was a cross between a donkey and a zebra. I showed them a picture, and they were amazed and delighted by the cute little creature, even though some had seen zedonks on TV before. Then I asked them if they knew any hybrid animals.

"Ligers!" James shouted. He proceeded to tell me that they are "super ultra fantastic wonderful cool."

I was instantly reminded of Napoleon Dynamite as I beamed back at him.

"Yes, they are cool," I agreed. 

"I know a plant," Andy said.

"Yes? What's that?" I asked.

"A pomato."

"Hmm, I've never heard of that," I said. "What is it - a tomato and...?"

"A potato," he told me.

I asked if it was hard like a potato or juicy like a tomato, struggling to picture the fruit-like tuber in my mind, but he didn't know. It was only later that, thanks to google, I realised a pomato isn't really a hybrid but just two plants skillfully grown together and pruned to become one plant that yields tomatoes above grown and potatoes below.

But my best response came from Alice. She put up her hand and said, "Spider and man. Spiderman!"

Only the best hybrid, ever! LOL
